Summary:
One of the main ways that a taxonomy, thesaurus, or any controlled vocabulary is valuable is that it brings together various synonyms or different wordings of the same concept together so that users retrieve the desired results despite different ways to describe it. Thus, an important part of creating good taxonomies is developing useful variants for terms. These may be called synonyms, alternative labels, nonpreferred terms, etc. This presentation explains the different types of variants and provides thorough instruction on creating them. Topics covered include: definitions, examples, usage, types, creation and implementation, how many to create, impact of the user interface and search, and variations/customizations.

This is an expanded version of a presentation delivered at Taxonomy Boot Camp London in October.

About the Presenter:
Heather Hedden is a senior vocabulary editor at Gale/Cengage Learning, where she edits the subject thesaurus for the indexing/retrieval of Gale research database content and develops and edits discipline taxonomies for educational products. Previously she worked as a taxonomist at Viziant, First Wind, and Project Performance Corporation and also as an independent taxonomy consultant at Hedden Information Management. Heather has taught online workshops in taxonomy creation through the continuing education program of Simmons College School of Library and Information Science and the American Society for Indexing. They will cover how and why their organizations decided to implement a taxonomy, their approaches to implementation, lessons learned, and the current status. After lunch, the presenters will be available for small group discussions and Q&A with participants who will move around to the speaker tables to interact directly with them. Then three technology and standards groups will present short overviews of their products. Presenters will be available for participants to speak directly with them for a more in-depth understanding of the concepts and options available from each.

The Taxonomy Division Needs You!

Colleagues:

The Taxonomy Division Needs You!

Serving on the Division board is a great opportunity to develop leadership and management skills, meet and work with others in the association and the field, and influence the direction of a new and vibrant Division. If not you, who? Have someone you think would be an asset to the board? Consider nominating that person!

We have the following Executive Board openings for 2016:

Chair-Elect / Chair / Past Chair (3-Year Term)
This individual serves one year as Chair-elect, effective January 2016, and becomes Chair of the Division in January 2017 or earlier, if the Chair is unable to serve. This individual will serve as Past-chair in 2018. The Chair-elect and current Chair are asked to represent the Division at the Division Cabinet meetings at the SLA Annual Conference and possibly, the Leadership Summit, in addition to participating in regular Division board meetings via webinar.

Treasurer (2-Year Term)
The Division treasurer has two main duties: 1) handle the Division’s money, and 2) keep Division leadership and the larger SLA leadership informed about the financial activity and health of the Division. The treasurer fills out monthly and yearly reports to document this activity and is a signatory on the Division’s bank account. It’s a great way to learn about the financial side of running an organization.

Nomination process
If you want to nominate someone (or yourself!), please send the nomination by e-mail to
nominations@taxonomy.sla.org by Friday, Sept. 11, 9 AM Central. For questions or more details about either position, please contact Kathleen McElhinney.

Thank you!
Kathleen McElhinney, Chair, 2016 Taxonomy Division Nominations Committee
