Summary: Taxonomies have finally come of age, and like mature gardens, they require careful cultivation and pruning. Join Paula McCoy of ProQuest, Heather Hedden of Cengage Learning and Wendi Pohs of InfoClear Consulting as they discuss their current taxonomy maintenance projects, and the tools and processes that help them do their work.

Paula will talk about ProQuest’s efforts to consolidate many of its specialized vocabularies. Heather will share work on a current project involving changing policies and approaches to dealing with orphan terms in the Gale subject thesaurus. Based on her experience at various client sites, Wendi will discuss the trends in governance and tooling that she sees emerging to manage mature taxonomies.

About the Presenters

Paula McCoy is Senior Manager, Content Technology, at ProQuest’s Editorial office in Louisville, Kentucky.  She oversees all editorial operations, including indexing and taxonomy management. She has been Taxonomy Manager for ProQuest since 2003. In that time, the ProQuest Thesaurus has grown from 8,000 terms to over 13,000; indexing has become largely automated; and the company has acquired many specialized vocabularies that are now being fully managed and, in several cases, integrated into the larger PQ Thesaurus. Paula joined SLA and the Taxonomy Division in December 2010. She is currently Chair of the division.

Heather Hedden is a Senior Vocabulary Editor at Cengage Learning, author of The Accidental Taxonomist, continuing education instructor at Simmons College School of Library and Information Science, SLA Taxonomy Division board member, American Society for Indexing board member, and NISO Bibliographic Roadmap Development Project working group member.

Wendi Pohs is Past-Chair of the Taxonomy Division, and CTO at InfoClear Consulting, a consultancy that specializes in semantic technologies, including taxonomy, auto-categorization, search, and graph database.  InfoClear Consulting has been helping large companies build, manage, and integrate semantic data structures for almost 15 years.
